About

Onsite wastewater treatment systems, commonly known as septic systems, are required for most rural and suburban parcels before a home, ADU, or addition can be approved. A site evaluation and soils testing determines the type of system a parcel can support. Design, permitting, and certification then follow the standards of the local jurisdiction, which vary by county.

Site Evaluations and Soils Testing

A site evaluation and soils testing is conducted with an excavator and the local regulatory agency. Test holes are evaluated to determine whether a standard system is feasible or an alternative design is required under local regulations. Where required by the local jurisdiction, percolation testing is conducted to measure soil absorption rates and to inform system type and sizing.

Design and Permitting

Plans are prepared from the site evaluation findings and submitted to the local jurisdiction for review and permit issuance. Requirements and review timelines differ by county. Once a permit is issued, a septic contractor may proceed with installation.

Inspection and certification

Construction inspections are conducted at required stages to confirm the system is installed to the approved plans. Final certification is submitted to the jurisdiction upon satisfactory completion.
